James R. Ryan Sr.

Ryan Sr., 88, residing in Sandusky, passed away Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at his home surrounded by family.Jim was born March 21, 1929, in Sandusky, to Emmett and Lena (Kosel) Ryan.Jim was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School and retired from Kroger after 42 years of service. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and a former member of the Oxford Grange. Jim was a profound rummy player, loved woodworking, and always had some sort of ongoing project. He enjoyed gardening and had built his own greenhouse. He liked to square dance and had a wonderful sense of humor. Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family.Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanne (Baatz) Ryan, whom he married on July 5, 1952. He is also survived by his seven children, James (Ruthie) Ryan Jr. of Texas, Connie (Tom) Zouhary of Holland, Ohio, Cathy (David) Frankart of Castalia, Dan Ryan of Norwalk, Cynthia (Michael) Pauley of Georgia, David (Mindy) Ryan of Florida and Dale (Carolyn) Ryan of Clyde; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister, Helen (Carl) Nagel of Sandusky; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Mary Jeanne Fultz, two sisters and three brothers.Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4, with a Rosary service beginning at 7:40 p.m. at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Prayers will be recited in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 428 Tiffin Ave., Sandusky. Father Jeff Walker will officiate. Joanna was born Jan. 6, 1965, in Sterling, the daughter of Paz Martinez and Encarnation Castaneda.Survivors include two daughters, Amanda Carter of Sterling and Kassandra Carter of Rock Falls; one son, Paul Bash of Sterling; three brothers, Henry Castaneda of Dixon, Paz (Roberta) Martinez of Sterling, and Jacinto Martinez of San Antonio; two sisters, Dominga Heald of Kewanee and Magdelene (William) Fassler of Sterling; and one grandson.She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Breanna Carter.Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, and the funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday at Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation in Sterling.
